Count the number of pilings on your pier and contact Eric at Carp Guard at (832-275-7630) or email at carpguardtx@gmail.com to receive a quote.

Wooden pilings thin near the water line over time from algae buildup and marine organisms (e.g. carp) that pull wood away as they eat the algae off the pilings.  Wooden piers/boathouses are very expensive to repair or replace and installation of Carp Guard sleeves is a cost-effective step to protect your investment.

The sleeves are lightweight and formed to fit snug around square pilings.  Dock owners can install the sleeves themselves or Carp Guard can provide contacts for customers interested in hiring an installer.

No.  Carp Guard sleeves can be used on new docks to prevent deterioration from getting started or on docks in place 15+ years to stop the thinning and weakening process in its tracks to extend the life of your dock.

  1. Count the number of square pilings
  2. Measure the pilings to determine exact sizes (e.g. nominal 6" square piling) since pilings have variability in size so for instance in 6" pilings: 6", 6 1/4", and 6 1/2" models are available
  3. Determine desired sleeve elevation so that the 4-foot long sleeve straddles the normal water elevation which is where the majority of thinning and weakening occurs (e.g. 1/3 above normal elevation and 2/3 below) .... this is dependent on the variability of the water level.
  4. Determine orientation of the seam location (e.g. all on shore side of piling, lake side, etc.) so that it has a consistent look and seam away from normal wave direction.  The sleeve protection is effective in any orientation and is personal preference for appearance.
  5. Layout the correct size sleeve at each piling location (stage them on the dock near the piling) and determine if any obstructions such as dock fenders.  The sleeve can be installed under existing dock fenders.
  6. Gather your stainless-steel roofing nails or stainless-steel screws and plastic washers to be used to secure the sleeves.  304 SS  1 1/4" ring shank roofing nails and 2" black plastic washers for the seam work well but other equivalent fasteners will work.

AT THIS POINT YOU WILL BE ENTERING THE WATER, ENSURE YOU PRACTICE PROPER WATER SAFETY (LIFE JACKETS, LADDERS OR OTHER FORMS OF EGRESS, SPOTTER ON THE DOCK, AND OTHER SAFEGUARDS AS NEEDED)

  • Pull open the sleeve at the seam, wrap it around the piling, and adjust to desired elevation.  Pull the sleeve snug and secure with a couple bunjee cords to hold it in place prior to nailing.
  • Nail at top and water line for the three sides that do not have the overlap seam.  For the overlap seam use combination of nails with washers (or without washers) and nail the seam every 4-8" so that seam lays flat.
  • For nailing below the water surface, it is best to use short backswing with repeated, quick swings to start the nail and then use short backswing to keep head of the hammer centered on the nail head as you finish driving the nail.
  • 13-15 stainless nails or screws and plastic washers are used per sleeve.
